Jal jeera masala soda is a quick, fizzy Indian drink. We mix tangy lemon, fresh mint and ready jal jeera masala into cold soda. It is sharp, chatpata and very refreshing, and it is sugar-free. It takes less than five minutes to make.

Why you'll love this recipe:

  • Ready in minutes with simple things from your kitchen
  • Sugar-free and great for thirst
  • Tangy, spicy and fizzy — nice after a meal
  • A healthier choice than cold drinks from the shop

What you get in every glass

This may be the lightest drink on my whole site — around 13 calories a glass and almost sugar-free. That is why I love it in place of shop cold drinks and packet sodas, which have a lot of sugar. This gives you all the fizz and tang with none of the guilt. Jal jeera is also a well-loved drink after meals, because cumin and these spices are known to help digestion. So I often serve it after a heavy lunch.

How I make it nicely

Fresh lemon juice makes a real difference here — bottled juice is just not the same. I first mix the jal jeera masala fully in a little lemon juice so there are no dry lumps, then add cold soda and put the mint at the end so the bubbles stay fresh. Serve it at once, while it is most fizzy.

Make it your own

Start with a little black salt and add more to taste — it should be tangy and a little chatpata. Add a few extra mint leaves for freshness, soaked sabja seeds for texture, or a pinch of roasted cumin for deeper taste. If you like it without fizz, plain cold water works just as well.
